Comic Book Review: Darkness/Vampirella

Volume 1 issue 1 July 2005

Good morning Party people!

Today is the day for another comic book review!

I got this comic book for Christmas. I’ve never read a Vampirella comic before so I was excited to read this one. Vampirella’s story ties in with my favorite character of all time Lady Death. So that means, I had to start collecting these to understand their whole story/world. Not that I’m complaining.

So lets get started….

Writing Style

First things first the writing. A lot goes into a comic book writing wise, not only do you have to have the whole story down, but you have to put illustrations with each scene. I love the kind of comic books that start off giving us the characters thoughts. It kind of sets the story up for the reader. Because I don’t know what happened prior to this one.

The character we start off with is looking for a new host, so that immediately makes me assume some kind of alien parasite or something has attached itself to this man stuck in an asylum.

Then Vampirella is introduced, and so is darkness. Vampirella is following Darkness, waiting while he goes about his shady business in the underground of their city.

Vampirella is working for someone, we haven’t have confirmation on who it is yet, but I’m looking forward to learning more about their story.

Art Style

I love the colors and the line work that is used through out this book. The colorist Tyson Wenger does a great job in setting the tone of the scene with the colors that are used. The high contrast between purples and greens, then the reds and blacks during explosive scenes. There are a lot of reds and purples.

There are so many little details in the panels that you could read this comic book multiple times and still find something new in the illustration. I love the shading, and how it brings so much more depth to the scenes.

I wanted to talk about darkness because 1. he’s hot, 2. He has serious Rhysand and Hunt vibes if they were combined into the same person. I would be interested in seeing some romance between him and vampirella at some point down the line.

I really enjoyed this comic book, and I cannot wait to hit the comic store to try to find the rest of the copies in this series.
