Niabi killed for it once and is prepared to kill again.
Crispin wants it and is determined to have his revenge.
Salome wants nothing to do with it, but has to fight for it.
After years of people insisting she must be cursed due to her discolored left eye, Salome starts to believe they might be right. But when Harbona the Seer unexpectedly visits her, he reveals not only has the Year of the Hunter begun, but Salome’s distorted eye is in actuality the Mark of the Hunter, and she is charged to avenge the blood of the innocent.
With the Immortal Seer, their axe-wielding guardian, and a dangerous bounty hunter known as the Wanderer in their company, Salome and her brother, Crispin, embark on a journey to defeat their sister and reclaim the White Throne.

Writing Style

There is a coming together of fantastic world building, character development and conflict paired with a writing style that gives just enough to keep you interested while holding back enough to keep you interested. Gauthier uses great descriptions for her settings that creates a beautiful image for us readers. I love the personalities that she has given her characters and how they differentiate in personality and in goals. It makes them well rounded characters that have their own identity which I love.

The story is told in multiple POVs, but I feel like this helps the author give us a more 3D look at what is going on in the story with all of the different subplots expanding an already interesting main plot.

Character Information

Salome – a fiesty FMC that is more stubborn than a mule, but she loves her small family fiercely and will do what she has to in order to protect them. She is a devastating hunter/warrior and has been training her entire life for the adventure she has begun.

Crispin – Salome’s brother. He wants revenge, revenge for the family that he lost, and the life he was unable to live. But, will he be able to set that aside to help his sister get the vengeance they are due or will he continue on a path of hatred toward his own doom? He is just as stubborn as Salome, and that leads to them butting heads frequently.

Niabi – She’s lost everyone she has ever loved. What will she do when she learns of her siblings survival after her betrayal? Will the Green eyed raven fight for her throne once more?

My Opinions

I feel like Gauthier is just scratching the surface of the adventure with this book, and things are going to get more and more interesting as the books go on. I’m interested to see what happens to the characters as they each struggle to reach their goals. I’m interested to see where all of this is leading to. I cannot wait to see what the rest of her world looks like.

I definitely recommend however this book is YA and does not have much romance yet. I have a feeling something might happen with one of the characters, but I haven’t gotten there yet.
