I want to write a bit of an introduction to this post. Comics, graphic novels and books are all things that I love as a reader. I love the art aspect of the comic books, just as much as I love the artistic flare of a novel. So I want to try to start incorporating more comic books in my reviews starting with this one.
I was drawn to this graphic novel because the animation reminded me heavily of Fairly Oddparents. Unlike the show this graphic novel is definitely intended for an older audience.
Trigger warning: Lots of gore in this book, and death and killing
Blurb:
An Adventure Time/Alice in Wonderland-style epic that smashes it’s cute little face against grown-up, Tank Girl/Deadpool-esque violent madness. Follow Gert, a forty year old woman stuck in a six year olds body who has been stuck in the magical world of Fairyland for nearly thirty years. Join her and her giant battle-axe on a delightfully blood soaked journey to see who will survive the girl who HATES FAIRYLAND.
I love comic books and graphic novels that have the sort of cartoon animation to it, but when I picked up this book I had no idea what I was getting into.
The Art:
The story was written and drawn by Skottie Young with how cartoonish the illustrations are while still being realistic. The colors are wild and vivid throughout the story. I love all of the colors they used, but I think thats also why I correlated the cover with Fairly Oddparents. I’m not complaining though, this definitely fulfilled some long lost childhood dream that I didn’t even know I had.
The main character and her signature green hair and bad attitude are my favorite characters aside from Thaddeus J. Star. I love Gertrude’s whole aesthetic, and I think this is what deadpool would act like if he had been trapped in a 6 year old’s body.
The Story:
The Story follows Gertie as she is sucked through some kind of portal and deposited in Fairyland….painfully. The queen tells her that the only way she can leave is by going on a quest for a key to open the door that would lead her home.
That was 27 years ago.
Now at the prime age of 33, our main character still looks like a 6 year old. The only thing that had gotten older was her mind. The comic book follows her through her shenanigans as she travels through the world looking for some kind of clue as to where the key is.
But she’s started making some enemies, ok she hasn’t started more like the candylanders got tired of Gertrude fucking their shit up after 27 years and they came up with the plan.
I really did love this story. The plot twist was creative, one I kind of saw coming but only because of the type of person Gertrude had grown into. Definitely a good read, but should be read by mature audiences. Some of the content is a lot.
I definitely recommend to my comic book readers out there, or anyone looking to read something a little outside their usual.
If you read it, send me a DM on instagram (Squidney_Skye) I’d love to hear your thoughts 🙂
